The Q&A Archives: Lilac

Question: What is the best way to prune Lilacs

Answer: Lilacs can be thinned lightly every year after they bloom. Remove a few of the oldest stems by cutting them off at the base, down by the ground. Also remove any new shoots from the ground that are smaller than a pencil. This annual process keeps the plant growing vigorously.
