The Q&A Archives: Summer Garden

Question: Growing up on the east coast we had lots of vegetables and herbs in our garden! I now live on the west coast and would still love a garden with lots of vegetables and herbs, but I have NO idea where to begin!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!

Answer: I think you'll find the seasons reversed in the Valley of the Sun. Summer veggies are typically grown in the cooler months - October through April. By the time summer rolls around (in June), most annuals either keel over, or wait patiently for cooler weather. The Arizona State University has an online Master Gardener manual with planting date suggestions for all types of veggies and herbs. Check out this website:

You'll find a list of veggies on the opening page. If you're interesting in soil prep and water conveservation, etc., simply go forward or backward in the manual, or click on the index. You'll find a wealth of information on this site.

Best wishes with your new garden!
