| What kind of soil preparation is needed before planting Azaleas |
| Azaleas need soil that is acidic, organic and humusy, evenly moist and yet well drained. You should run some basic soil tests to determine the pH and then adjust accordingly. Added organic matter is usually needed; this can be compost, well rotted autumn leaves, well aged stable manure/bedding, pine fines, or similar materials. You may also need to add some coarse sand, depending on the local soil. In many cases a slightly raised bed is helpful to assure good drainage. Your local county extension should be able to help you with the soil testing and interpreting the results for growing azaleas. |
