The Q&A Archives: weeds in vegetable and fruit beds?

Question: What can we use for weed control in our asparagus and our raspberry patch that will not destroy the plants?

Answer: The best weed control would be to use a generous layer of organic mulch year round. This helps keep down the weeds, reduces the need for watering, and also helps feed the soil on an ongoing basis. If necessary, you could hoe lightly before putting down the mulch. You could also cover the area with sheets of newspaper before spreading the mulch. This excludes light and prevents most weeds from coming up at all. The mulch conceals the paper and both eventually break down to feed the soil.
