Some people report that lemon scented plants such as the lemon scented geraniums or lemon thyme can be helpful. However, in my experience the best deterrent to mosquitoes is to remove any breeding places: stagnant water and chronic muddy areas. Mosquitoes will also harbor in damp underbrush, so a mowed perimeter can be of some help. In your area, where mosquitoes are so widespread, you may find that a screened porch is the best answer. The CDC also recommends wearing protective clothing and insect repellent.
