This depends on how wide the trees grow, and whether or not you can limb them up so the branches begin above the top of the fence. Branches that overhang the property line can be removed by your neighbor if they wish, so it is better not to plant too close to the line. And, the trees will do best in full sun and with free air circulation around them. The mature width of the tree depends on the specific variety of tree you have. If your tree is expected to reach 30 feet wide, then plant it at least 15 from the fence and 30 feet from the next tree in the row.
