The Q&A Archives: What to plant

Question: What annuals should I buy for hanging baskets that get full hot afternoon?

Answer: Some annuals that can tolerate that hot afternoon sun would include petunias, lantana, million bells (calibrachoa), mandevilla, verbena, black eyed Susie vine (Thunbergia alata) as well as succulents. The larger your container, the better, as this will help insulate the soil/roots from the heat. Also, using a trailing plant on the western side of the container will help shade the roots. Be sure to water often enough that the soil mix stays evenly moist, not dried out.
