| Sunflower is the common name for the genus Helianthus annus. (Helios means sun in Greek and annus designates it as an annual). Like their name, sunflowers adore full sun and warm weather. The operative word here is sun. Like its name the sunflower needs plenty of direct sun; a minimum of 6hrs a day to grow healthy plants. If you plant sunflowers out of direct sun light they will stretch for the sun. They will become so spindly stretching for the sun eventually they will fall to the ground. We recommend full sun for the better part of the day to grow strong healthy sunflowers. When given adequate sunshine, sunflower stalks will be sturdy enough to support the flowerhead so they won't need to be staked. As a side note, the heads of the sunflower tend to follow the predominate direction of the sun. So, plant them in a garden spot where you can enjoy looking at the fronts of the heads (rather than the backs of their heads!). Hope this answers all your questions! |
