The Q&A Archives: Keeping soil moist

Question: How do keep my potted plant soil moist; it seems to dry out and get hard once I bring it home.

Answer: Keep the unused material in the bag, roll the top down and close it securely with a clip or two or weight it down to keep it from drying out. If it is a soil-less mix that has dried out, measure out the amount you will need and put it in a clean bucket, break up the clods as best you can, sprinkle with warm water (important: add a drop or two of liquid soap to the water) and mix thoroughly; let it sit for a few hours and then remix again before potting. This should rehydrate it.
