Is is possible to grow peppers in containers outside? I have small raised beds for gardening, but the slugs decimate my peppers. If I could grow them in containers on the deck, I could save space in my raised beds for other vegetables as well as eliminate the slug problem on the peppers. Is this a possibility? |
Absolutely! I sometimes grow peppers this way myself. Your only big consideration is making sure you have a container that is large enough to accommodate the peppers. I think half whiskey barrels are great for this purpose. When you plant in containers you have to be sure the plants get enough nutrients. Accomplish this by enhancing the soil with organic matter, such as compost, leaf mold or composted cow manure. Also be sure to fertilize appropriately and keep on top of watering. Containers dry out quickly. Don't assume the slugs won't scale the containers ... slugs are ruthless. You may want to consider placing slug traps around to keep them away from your plants. |
