| I would like to put a little seperation between me and the neighbors. I would like any suggestions as to what will grow fast and thick. The area I want to plant in is in the shade largely due to 40' evergreen (hemlock?) which also may affect soil conditions. That being said, what would be good to improve soil conditions? |
| Based on your description this will be a difficult area to plant. Most plants are not able to grow beneath an evergreen because the evergreen roots steal water and nutrients and the branches cast heavy shade and also block rain from reaching the ground. And, most shade tolerant plants are slow growers by nature. You might be able to grow Catawba rhododendrons there, or perhaps one of the newer extra-cold tolerant boxwoods. Boxwoods are however very slow growers. You might want to consult with your local county extension for ideas as well. Perhaps with a more detailed understanding of the growing conditions in that spot they will have some suggestions. |
