| just bought 2 CLEVELAND SELECT FLOWERING PEARS they are about7-8'tall- pyrus calleryana from your pleasant hills store the I.D.tag states that they should mature at 30'tall and 40'wide however some internet sites are listing the maturity specs. to be 30' tall and ONLY 15'wide this is a huge difference in widths was YOUR planting tags wrong??? what can i expect???? can i top them and accelerate the widening process????? if i can, when and how should i do this????? i was hoping to get these trees to be 20-25'wide and 30' or so tall to give my front yard some coverage/privacy. if these can't do the job, i'll take them back and purchase something else you could recommend. thanks john |
| The flowering pears are generally pyramidal in shape, so in my opinion they would not provide good coverage for privacy purposes. Topping the trees would ruin their structure and strength and absolutely would not result in the shape you desire. Also, the flowering pears tend to experience breakage problems in snow and ice storms as they age, so many never reach their full potential size. You might want to consider some of the Magnolia soulangiana cultivars or possibly one of the newer disease resistant crabapple varieties and select one with a mature size and rounded shape better suited to your purpose. Or you might look at some of the red maples such as Acer rubrum "October Glory" which is a bit larger, but rounded in outline and a relatively fast grower. |
