How can I thin out clay mud (foundation)? I heard to I can mix sand and soil, but what is the ratio of each?

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. The spring rush has brought a deluge of questions and we are working hard to catch up!

Sand is not the best way to improve a clay soil for gardening. I suggest you mix in lots of compost, even 4 inches or more. This will help loosen the clay into a better soil foundation for growing plants.
