Orthene is one of the most popular systemic insecticides. However, a systemic travels throughout a plant and could have an adverse effect on pollinating insects such as bees. As for the caterpillars, you can get fast results by spraying the pests with Bt (bacillus thuringensis), sold as Dipel. This is a stomach poison which targets caterpillars, but doesn't harm beneficial insects such as honeybees.

Best wishes with your garden.
