Most shrubs do not do well in total shade, however there are many perennials that you could plant such as assorted hostas and ferns, pulmonaria, dicentra, lamium, tricyrtis, and natives such as Solomon's seal, tiarella, and Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica.) If you are looking for a groundcover you might use Vinca minor or English ivy or Pachysandra or Lily of the Valley. For additional summer color you might enjoy impatiens or tuberous begonias as well. I hope this gives you some ideas.
