Answer: If stored properly, most of the grass seeds will remain viable for 2-3 years. Before using it you can test the viability by folding 10 seeds into a damp paper towel. Place the paper towel in a plastic bag and set it on your kitchen counter. Check the seeds in 10 days and count the number that has sprouted. This will give you the average percentage of viability. If, for instance, 5 out of the 10 seeds germinated, you'll know that only 50 percent of the seeds will sprout and you can double the recommended broadcast rate.
