Dear Garden Club:
I have crabgrass and other summer type weeds in my lawn. Other than using Ortho weed b gone or fertilizers with weed control in them is their a more organic way of getting rid of weeds other than hand pulling or using a weed popper? I use chemical weed control but I would prefer not to have to use that for long term use it is not good for our environment. What is your advice? Thanks. KH

Kristi,

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. The spring rush has brought a deluge of questions and we are working hard to catch up!

The best weed control is a healthy dense turf. If you can build your turf over the coming months by deep but infrequent watering, regular mowing and moderate fertilizing you will find that next summer there is not nearly so much crabgrass or other annual weeds that are able to sprout and grow in the turf. In time you can essential eliminate these weeds and if a few do show up here and there hand pulling is no big deal at all.

Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening season. Please stop in again soon!
