If you have the right ratio of green to brown, it should heat up within 3-4 days all on its own. If it doesn't, you can add a shovelful of garden soil (full of microbes) and then wet the pile down to get it started. Or, you can add grass clipping or chicken manure, or even a cup of nitrogen fertilizer. There are also compost pile boosters available at garden centers if you'd like to invest a few dollars into getting your compost pile jump-started.

Best wishes with your compost pile.
