I've got an elephant ear in a container, and it looks a little bare. What can I plant, annual-wise, around the base of it to give a little zing?

If the container is large so the elephant ear will not outcompete the other plants, you could add some impatiens or begonias for color if the container is in morning sun or dappled light all day. If you keep the soil constantly wet by setting the container in a saucer of water, that would be too wet for the annuals. But you could add a Houttuynia cordata or Chameleon plant. (Do not let the Houttunia root into your garden however as it can be invasive when planted in the ground.) I hope this gives you some ideas.
