I saw something that talked about a Cottage Garden which is a garden that incorporates fruit trees, vegetables, herbs, flowers, etc.

I have decided to turn our 40' x 40' fenced-in weedpatch into a Cottage Garden and was looking for information/designs, etc. on same.

Some classic "cottage garden" flowers include: Hollyhocks, Lavender, Black Eyed Susan, Cosmos, Primrose, Zinnia, Salvia, Foxgloves, Columbines, Cottage Pinks, Canterbury Bells, Poppy, and of course, roses (preferably a shrub rose or a climber).

40 x 40 is quite a large area to tackle all at once. You might want to start at one end, and work your way out over a few seasons so you're not overwhelmed.

You might want to include an apple, crabapple, or pear tree, and a kitchen gardenarea with herbs and greens. It's up to you! There are lots of books available--check out your library or local bookstore for ideas.
