Landscaping issues - Knowledgebase Question

I have a yard that is almost an acre and the house sits almost dead center of the lot. The lot is long and kind of narrow. I have tried to plan an effective landscape design but I am not doing well with it. If you can give some suggestions for this type of lot, I would be very thankful.

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. The spring rush has brought a deluge of questions and we are working hard to catch up!

That is a tough question to answer in an e-mail. I would suggest you contact your County Extension Office. They offer a landscaping class periodically in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area that is very good and teaches you the principles to use. Then you design something and get to sit down with an expert to review the plan for comments. As an alternative there are books on landscaping and some helpful websites too. Here is one to review:
