The Q&A Archives: Thistle in new lawn

Question: I'm trying to kill off thistle in our new lawn. What is the best way without harming the lawn? I've tried weed-b-gone and it hasn't done a thing. I also have pets so I need to know how to handle them with whatever I use.

Answer: Thistle is a tough weed to control. Adapt good lawn maintenance (ie: regular mowing, improve drainage, etc.), plus good turf management practices to create a dense competitive turf grass. You can spot treat the thistle plants with the broadleaf herbicide 2,4-D. Keep your pets off the lawn immediately after treating the weeds (see product label for precise timing).

Best wishes with your new lawn.
