Both fall and spring are good times to dig and divide hostas. Dig the entire clump up and then cut through it with a garden spade, dividing it into several pieces. The roots will be dense and difficult to cut through, but it can be done. Just make sure that each new division has both roots and foliage attached. When you replant, plant at the same soil level as they were growing before, and be sure to water the new divisions in well.
