The Q&A Archives: dwarf avocado

Question: I would like to grow an avocado tree in my backyard. I have heard various information. I went to my neighborhood nursery and the person there stated that given where I live it may or may not (more so) be warm/hot enough for the tree to grow. How do I know for sure?

Answer: The most limiting factor to success with avocado trees is severe cold. Avocado is a tropical to subtropical tree that, with some exceptions, is best adapted to relatively frost-free areas. Some types are killed outright by moderate freezes and others have regenerated after sustaining complete death of all aboveground parts.

"Mexicola" is a cold hardy avocado (to 18 degrees) so you might want to give this one a try.
