In most cases a large growth of fungus on the trunk or bark of a tree is a sign of a potentially serious internal problem such as significant decay. I would strongly suggest you work with your local county extension or consult on site with a professionally trained and certified arborist with experience in ornamental trees to obtain a specific diagnosis of the problem. Based on knowing that, you can decide how to proceed. Good luck with your tree.
