Answer: You should be able to move the tree without problem. Try not to sever too many roots and don't worry about removing the old clay soil - much of it should fall off during the transport. Just for reference, I had a 6' tall tree with a 2" caliper trunk. I dug a 12" deep, 24" wide hole and got most of the roots. You may need to adjust for whatever sized tree you're working with.
