We want to transplant a small flowering crab tree from a lot adjacent to ours that is heavy clay into our yard which is not so much. How sensitive are these trees to their roots being cut? How many roots should you leave intact? Should you try to remove the clay? Any advice would be appreciated. |
You should be able to move the tree without problem. Try not to sever too many roots and don't worry about removing the old clay soil - much of it should fall off during the transport. Just for reference, I had a 6' tall tree with a 2" caliper trunk. I dug a 12" deep, 24" wide hole and got most of the roots. You may need to adjust for whatever sized tree you're working with. Good luck with the move! |
