The Q&A Archives: boxelder insect

Question: How can you control, get rid of or kill the boxelder insect?

Answer: The answer to this depends on what type of problem you are experiencing. Keep in mind that boxelder bug damage is not typically fatal to boxelder trees and they do not harm other types of plants. They do not bite or harm property (although they may stain.) In general, they are not harmful but can be a nuisance. In cases where they become a nuisance by clustering on a house for example, they can be vaccuumed off. If they are getting inside, the best solution is to make sure your home is well caulked and sealed to prevent them from entering. (This also helps keep your home energy efficient.) In general, they do not really need to be controlled. And, just because you have had a problem with them in the past does not mean you will have a problem again. Also, they can travel long distances -- so they may appear even though you treated the ones in your yard.
