Small bare spots can be seeded. Loosen the soil and work in some compost, mixing it in to about six inches deep. Then seed, press the seed firmly to the soil, and keep moist until it germinates. If the weather turns hot, you may want to spread a very light layer of straw over the area to help shade it and keep it from drying out too fast. Alternatively, you can use a lawn patch kit (usually sold near grass seed) and follow the label directions.
