| All vegetable plants like sunny locations and rich, loose, well drained soil. If you're preparing a garden for the first time, spread a 4-6 inch layer of organic matter such as compost, aged manure, peat moss or leaf mold, over the area and dig or rototil it in to a depth of 8-12 inches. Then rake smooth and mark rows with string. Dig shallow trenches for watering and place the soil on top of the rows you've marked. Try not to step on the rows or you'll compact the soil. Pea seeds can be planted earlier than most others because they don't mind cold soils and cool air temperatures. Wait until two weeks after your last frost to plant most other seeds. After planting, water your garden well and keep the soil moist until the plants begin to grow. Once started, veggies need about one-inch of water per week to thrive. |
