| Hi I bought a beautiful Daphne X burkwoodii from Home Depot. With most plants I unpot them, and losen the roots so they can take root and shape in the place they are planted. The Daphne X burkwoodii came in a clay ball surrounded in burlap. I untied the burlap but kept it around the root ball and planted it. Everywhere I am reading says to loosen the roots, but the clay root ball left me not wanting to disturb it. Please let me know if I should loosen the clay and roots. | Based on my experience, your instinct is right. I would remove and discard the string and the burlap (it may be synthetic, very difficult to tell them apart these days) and then loosen the roots. The clay can actually constrain the roots, especially if it is distinctly different from your native soil. Here is more information about the modern ball and burlap plants you may find helpful.
