I have an area that only gets sun in the afternoon and the soil is clay-ish. It stays damp and probably doesn't drain very well. It's in the front of the house so I want something that has color. What plant would grow in such conditions?

Ben,

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. The spring rush has brought a deluge of questions and we are working hard to catch up!

The area you described is a challenging area to grow plants. I think I'd try the cannas with yellow and green striped foliage or the very colorful variety called Tropicanna. Another option is to plant Louisiana iris there.

Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening season. Please stop in again soon!
