Your zip code places you in USDA winter hardiness zone 6A, or the coldest part of zone 6 and possibly as cold as zone 5 depending on your microclimate. The hardiest gardenias are only hardy into zone 7 (most do better in zone 8) so unfortunately gardenias would not grow as landscape plants in your area.
