Hi,

My name is Erin. My husband and I recently bought our first condo. We cannot plant outside but I am very interested in container gardening. I live in Southern Florida and I was wondering what plants would do the best in containers in the tropical climate. I recently purchased a Gardenia, a Dipladenia and a Bottle Palm which I am getting ready to put into clay containers that I am going to glaze with latex paint.

I was also interested in hanging baskets. Can I plant any anuals in the basket together, or do I have to be careful of which plants I mix together.

One last question, I have a really hard time knowing how much to water my plants. Is there a way by touching the soil that I should know if they need more or less water.

I am a beginner and have been reading the Home Depot website for guidance, but I guess I need a little more.

I appreciate your time.

Erin,

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. The spring rush has brought a deluge of questions and we are working hard to catch up!

Lots of plants can be grown in containers, especially if the container is large enough. The larger the better as there will be more soil for the roots and in your hot climate you won't have to water them quite so often. You can mix annuals in hanging baskets and other containers. Experiment to see what you like best and what works for you. In containers daily watering will likely be needed. You can dig down an few inches and feel the soil. Don't keep it soggy wet but rather water when it is just barely moist to the touch. Plants also vary in their tolerance or dry soil conditions.

Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening season. Please stop in again soon!
