when do I prune butterfly bushes to get maximum flowers each year?

Butterfly bushes bloom on new growth, so the time to prune is early spring. Trim off any winter killed branches, then as it regrows you can pinch or lightly prune one or twice to encourage branching. Once it begins blooming, deadheading will help encourage additional blooms.
