The Q&A Archives: Huckleberry

Question: My huckleberry bush has a lot of white globs (look like spit) on its branches. What is it, and what do I need to do about it?

Answer: Helga,

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. The spring rush has brought a deluge of questions and we are working hard to catch up!

Those are spittlebugs. That foamy substance is their protection. These are not major pests of plants and most gardeners simply spray them off periodically with a strong blast of water.

Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening season. Please stop in again soon!
