Gene,

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. The spring rush has brought a deluge of questions and we are working hard to catch up!

Netting is the only solution that comes to mind. Some gardeners claim putting Christmas ornaments painted tomato red in the garden before the fruit ripens will work at discouraging the birds but you'll have to try this as I have not seen any research to confirm it.
