| The answer to your question really depends on what kind of plant you are trying to grow as a hedge. Some of the shrubs used in hedges are deciduous and would drop their leaves naturally every fall, then leaf out again in the spring. Others are evergreen year round and never lose their leaves. One way to help evergreens hold their best possible color in the winter is to provide a wind break. A few evergreens naturally change color somewhat during the winter, then green up again in the spring. Hedges are usually maintained by mulching year round; applying a topdressing of compost each spring plus a granular or slow release fertilizer with an analysis of 10-10-10 or similar per the label directions. |
