| I purchased my first decorative hanging basket. It came with a coco liner. Obviously, I need to supply the flowers but my question is...do I need to fill the entire basket with soil? This will make the basket VERY heavy. Do I need to use a plastic liner with the coco basket? It will hang from my porch. Thanks in advance for the advice! |
| You will need to fill the basket with a soil-less potting mix formulated for container plants. (These are lighter weight than plain soil.) This will add weight, as will the water when you water the plants, and the plants as they grow, so use a very strong support to hang it from. The original purpose of the coir or moss liner is to hold extra water as a sort of reservoir and to enable planting on all sides of the container to provide a very full decorative look, especially when viewed from below. Some people use a plastic liner to help keep the soil moister by preventing evaporation from the sides, it may help the liner last longer, too, by keeping it dry. If you do, make some drainage holes in the bottom of the plastic so excess can drain out. If you use plastic, keep in mind it is harder to plant through the sides of the liner so that you have plants growing from the sides of the basket, and try to do it so the plastic doesn't show. It is a matter of personal choice whether or not to use the plastic. |
