Removing shrubs by digging or pulling them up by the roots can be quite a large job, depending on the size of the shrub. To dig them out you would cut the shrub off short near the ground using loppers, a saw, or chainsaw as needed to cut through the stems or trunks. Then dig out the roots using a sharp spade, shovel and/or possibly a mattock or even a hatchet as needed to cut through the woody roots. Shrubs can also be pulled out using a heavy chain attached to a heavy duty vehicle. It is best to work when the soil is moist from rain or a very deep watering. I hope this helps.
