Terrace, balcony and rooftop gardens can be challenging to plant, especially if the spot is a windy one. Your choice depends on whether it is sunny or shady and at what time of day, how much space you have, and whether or not the site is especially windy. In a large container such as a half whiskey barrel or bigger, you might be able to grow a smaller cultivar of crabapple, or perhaps a dwarf Alberta spruce, or in a very sheltered location you might be able to grow one of the hardier types of Japanese maple. Keep in mind that the tree will need to be watered so the soil stays evenly moist any time it is not frozen, and that the larger the container the better the insulation for the roots during the winter. Good luck with your project!
