I would like a shrub (one that can be kept small by pruning) for my flower garden under my kitchen window. The area faces north (a neighbor's house is about 20 feet away) and gets morning sun only. What type of shrub would tolerate this shady area? I have a bleeding heart bush that really likes this area and also some small ferns and lily of the valley in this area. Thank you kindly for your time and response.

This sounds like a good place for the white flowered Hydrangea arborescens. This shrub grows to about three feet tall and wide and does well with morning sun. It blooms during the summer after the bleeding heart has stopped blooming.
