| My father made a streambed from a spring in his yard, he has a small ponding area that is getting alot of algae, could you recommend what he could plant or do to prevent this? He lives in Hill City, MN(northern MN) thanks. |
| I apologize for the delay in answering your question. To some extent the algae may be seasonal, it often occurs when the water temperature is changing from winter cold to summer warm. Once the temperature stablilizes it should improve all on its own. Algae can also be caused by excess nutrients in the water. Be careful not to fertilize adjacent to the pond to prevent any runoff water carrying fertilizer into the pond. You might try planting some of the underwater oxygenating plants to use up the excess nutrients in the water, or once the weather is warm and settled, add a water hyacinth to use up the nutrients. Finally, different types of algae grow in different conditions. Hair algae grows in ciirculating or running water and can be removed by twisting it around a stick periodically. I hope this helps. |
