There are flea and tick controls that can be applied to the pets. I would suggest you consult with your veterinarian as to whether this would work for you and your pets. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends using insect repellents and wearing long sleeved shirts, socks, and long legged pants to protect from ticks. In general, treating a broad area is not recommended. However if you have serious tick problems in your yard, you may want to talk to your local Rutgers county extension to see what they might recommend based on the specific conditions in your yard. Always be sure to carefully read and follow all of the label directions on any product you use.
