How can I keep ants from eating my flowering cherry tree without hurting the tree?

Generally speaking the ants should not be harmful to the tree. It is possible however they are attracted to sap or honeydew from another insect such as aphids. I would suggest you consult with your local Penn State county extension to see if they can help you determine if there is actually a problem with your tree. Based on knowing that they can suggest any needed control measures.
