After purchasing my pot of tomotoes, broccoli, peppers or even bulb flowers, can i keep them in their original pots and expect them to thrive as well as if they were being planted in the ground?

Your plants will need to be transplanted into larger containers to accommodate their growth. The pot needs to provide space for their roots to expand as the foliage/stems grow. The larger volume also insulates the roots from excessive summer heat. And, the larger soil volume helps the soil stay moister longer. Tomatoes need at least a five gallon container, for example.
