The Q&A Archives: keeping plants in their original pots

Question: After purchasing my pot of tomotoes, broccoli, peppers or even bulb flowers, can i keep them in their original pots and expect them to thrive as well as if they were being planted in the ground?

Answer: Your plants will need to be transplanted into larger containers to accommodate their growth. The pot needs to provide space for their roots to expand as the foliage/stems grow. The larger volume also insulates the roots from excessive summer heat. And, the larger soil volume helps the soil stay moister longer. Tomatoes need at least a five gallon container, for example.
