The Q&A Archives: staining a fence

Question: what is the best way to stain a fence? what do we do with the water marks on it? it is a new home, however, the sprinkler already got to the fence. what is the best type of stain? semi-transparent? some recommended an oil base.

Answer: Once the water has stained the wood, there's no way to remove the stain. You can, however, use a soild stain, which will cover the water marks. Oil based soild stains are longer lasting than water based stains, but both will have to be reapplied every few years. Staining is best done when temperatures are between 50 and 80 degrees and the area is shaded from direct sunshine. Best wishes with your project!
