You might try epimedium, hosta, fern, and lily of the valley as accent plants; Shrub suggestions include:
?Annabelle? Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens ?Annabelle?) This ever-popular hydrangea sports large spherical white flower clusters that stand out against its dark green leaves. A quick grower that needs to be watered regularly throughout dry periods and trimmed to within 30 cm of the soil every autumn.

False Spirea (Sorbaria sorbifolia) This rustic, vigorous false spirea takes on considerable volume as it ages. The pale green foliage is dense but light. The white flowers develop an orange-beige hue in autumn and stay that way all winter. An ideal shrub for slopes.

Snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus) All summer, the discrete spikes of pinkish white flowers crown the branch tips, followed in September by white berries that last into the winter. A very rustic shrub that tolerates even the heaviest soils.

For trees, consider:
Pendula' Katsura (Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'Pendula') The first, bronze colored shoots sprout bright green leaves that fall in cascades from the graciously arching branches. Prefers damp soil and protection from winds.

Grafted Siberian Elm (Ulmus pumila) A small, remarkably globe-like grafted tree that looks great near a patio or path. Its dark green leaves turn yellow in autumn. Not afraid of dryness.

Best wishes with your landscape!
