| We recently acquired 30 lbs of bahiagrass seeds. Can you tell us about this grass and if it would make an acceptable lawn grass? Is it fast growing and what kind of care could we expect if we planted it? We have a 2.5 acre yard and have recently had 200 pines removed. Do you think our soil would be appropriate for it? |
| Before you seed the area, have the soil tested for fertility and pH. Pines prefer acidic soil, and their fallen needles help maintain acidity. You'll probably have to add lime (based on your soil test results) to make the soil suitable for any turfgrass. The recommended seeding rate is 2-3 lbs/1000 square feet, so your 30 lbs would cover about a quarter acre. Although Bahiagrass is a slow grower, it definitely has advantages: low thatching potential, good drought and wear tolerance, and low fertility needs (2-4 lbs of nitrogen per 1000 sq ft per year!).
