To some extent the selection depends on whether it is sunny or shady, wet or dry, and what kind of soil you have. But in a sunny spot you might try one modern landscape shrub rose such as KnockOut (or other flowering shrub) in each bed surrounded by perennials such as a few daylilies or sedum plants. Also plant some crocus and daffodils this fall for early spring color.

Be sure to add organic matter to the soil before planting and keep the bed mulched with organic mulch year round. This will help keep down weeds, reduce watering, and also feed the soil slowly as it breaks down over time. Enjoy your garden!
