I want a shrub that keeps its leaves in winter and have considered Bridal-White Spirea, red Weigela, Butterfly Bush or Forsythia. I need something that will thrive in sand/clay soil which can be upgraded with horse manure, on South West side of home. Which one is best? Thanks for all your help this year! God knows I need it... None of the plants you mention are evergreen; they all lose their leaves in the winter. How about Abelia, Barberry, Boxwood or Escallonia, instead. They're all hardy, like full sunshine, and are easy to keep pruned. Be sure to amend the soil with some organic matter before you plant your shrub, so the roots will have ample moisture and nutrients readily available. It will also be necessary to water the plant well during its first year so it can become established. After that, it can get along with about one inch of water per week. |
